As Tuesday dawned residents of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with exposed to extremely polluted air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Measurements

Multiple areas of the capital showed an air quality index over 500, which equals ten times the healthy level recommended by the World Health Organization.

Particular areas, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1800, equating to 15 to 20 times above safe limits.

Firecracker Prohibition and Current Policy Shifts

Since 2020, authorities had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the deadly pollution that covers the metropolis as the cold season begins.

However in recent months, the recently formed regional leadership appealed to the highest court to request a relaxation of the restrictions.

The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "cultural practices and environment".

Judicial Ruling and Implementation

Despite concerns of public health and environmental advocates, judges complied with the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the regulated periods across the metropolis, with minimal enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener type.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout Delhi showed pollution spiking around late evening to some of the worst levels seen during the festival in at least recent memory.

International Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming deteriorating pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from across the border following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high levels of pollution in Delhi have continued as a serious issue for over a decade and a half, with the problem showing no improvement.

During celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the atmosphere has been observed to spike to 70% higher the most severe readings ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly considered as the world's most polluted city.

Various Contamination Factors

This crisis in the capital is caused by a mix of multiple factors including transportation pollution, airborne particles, construction activities, rubbish burning and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of farming communities.

Within these states, rural residents regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, creating dangerous haze that then gets trapped over the capital as cooler air sets in.

Medical and Economic Toll

Both financial and medical impact on the nearly 33 million residents calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of neurological, heart and circulatory and lung diseases, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is estimated to be causing approximately 10k untimely deaths each year in the capital.
