Users Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users using such medications should be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of appetite.

"It was like a switch flipping and you're instantly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females than men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while these medications are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
